GeneDescription The tie family (tie-1 and tie-2/TEK is endothelium-specific receptor tyrosine kinases) have been discovered in mammalian systems. Knockout experiments in transgenic mice have demonstrated that these receptors play crucial and unique roles in endothelial cell differentiation and vascular morphogenesis (Dumont et al., 1994; Fong et al., 1995; Puri et al., 1995; Sato et al., 1995; Shalaby et al., 1995). In murine models, the tie family receptors are expressed later than the VEGF receptors and are thought to play a role in angiogenesis (tie-2) and endothelial cell integrity and survival (tie-1) (Dumont et al., 1994; Puri et al., 1995; Sato et al., 1995).
GeneFunction Lyons et al (1998), reported the cloning of the zebrafish homologues of the endothelium-specific receptor tyrosine kinases tie-1 and tie-2. The Z tie-2 clone represents the first report of a full-length zebrafish endothelium-specific gene. The zebrafish tie family members have significant structural homology with their murine and human counterparts. In addition, like the murine tie-1 and tie-2 genes, expression was found predominantly in endothelial cells. At 24-hr postfertilization (HPF), Z tie-1 was expressed in all observed populations of endothelial cells.
