GeneDescription Activin belongs to the TGF- superfamily and is a dimeric protein consisting of two similar but distinct beta-subunits, betaA and betaB. It has a major role in stimulatation of oocyte maturation and promotion of oocyte maturational competence in the zebrafish.
GeneFunction Wang Y and Ge W et al. (2003) examined the regulation of activin beta A and beta B expression by human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and its intracellular signal transduction mechanisms. They showed that the hCG-stimulated activin betaA expression is dependent on the activation of the cAMP-PKA pathway, whereas the inhibitory effect of hCG on activin betaB expression is likely mediated by PKA-independent pathway(s).Wang Y and Ge W et al. (2004) observed that EGF, epidermal growth factor of zebrafish ovary, by paracrine signalling, strongly stimulated the expression of both activin beta A and beta B.Wang Y and Ge W et al. (2004) studied the developmental profiles of activin betaA and betaB exhibit distinct expression patterns during the development of the ovary and the daily ovarian cycle of the zebrafish. They speculated that activin beta A is involved in promoting ovary and follicle growth, whereas activin betaB may have a tonic role throughout follicle development but becomes critical at the late stage of oocyte maturation and/or ovulation.DiMuccio et al. (2005) studied the role activin-A mediated gonadotropin-induced oocyte maturation in the zebrafish. They cloned the cDNAs second isoform of the activin-betaA subunit and the activin type IIA (ActRIIA) receptor and determined their regulation by gonadotropin. Their findings further support the involvement of the activin signaling cascade in gonadotropin-regulated gonadal activities.Jazwinska A et al. (2007) observed that a gene encoding a TGFbeta-related ligand, activin-betaA (actbetaA), was found to be strongly induced within 6 hr after fin amputation at the wound margin, and later in the blastema. They showed that Activin signaling is necessary for cell migration during wound healing and blastemal proliferation. Their findings revealed a role of Activin-betaA signaling in the tissue repair after injury and subsequent outgrowth formation during epigenetic regeneration of the vertebrate appendage.
