GeneDescription Taylor et al. (2003) reported that, bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) as one of several cell signaling proteins in the TGF-beta super family are involved in skeletal development. While tetrapod vertebrates possess one copy of this gene, zebrafish have (two bmp2a and bmp2b) and this is likely the result of the duplication of the ancestral bmp2 gene in rayfinned fishes.

Using transgenic lines that are ectopically expressed bmp2b, Chocron et al. (2007) showed a requirement for BMP signaling during early segmentation to repress southpaw expression in the right lateral plate mesoderm and regulate both visceral and heart laterality in Zebrafish development.Ramel et al. (2005) postulated that timely differentiation of the mesoderm requires the maintenance of non-axial mesoderm identity by Wnt8 and BMP2b at the onset of gastrulation followed by subdivision of the non-axial mesoderm into different functional domains during gastrulation. Ramel et al 2005 using swirl mutants of Zebrafish studied and reported that bmp2b is required for mesoderm patterning during the gastrulation.
