GeneDescription Taylor et al. (2003) reported that, bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) as one of several cell signaling proteins in the TGF-beta super family are involved in skeletal development. While tetrapod vertebrates possess one copy of this gene, zebrafish have (two bmp2a and bmp2b) and this is likely the result of the duplication of the ancestral bmp2 gene in rayfinned fishes.
GeneFunction Kawahara et al (2000) reported the expression of bmp2a genes in blastomere stage of Zebrafish embryo, during expression studies of vega1 gene. Gradel et al. (2000) studied the expression of bmp2a gene in dak mutants of Zebrafish which impede progression of apical epidermal development. Bauer et al. (2001) reported that alk8 gene acts downstream of bmp2b following his experiments with using the bmp2b mutants swirl.Reiter et al. (2001) studied the Bmp2b function partly through Gata5 to regulate nkx2.5 expression and found that bmp2b promotes the myocardial differentiation.Quint et al. (2001) studied the ectopic expression bmp2 in the blastema-induced excess bone deposition and altered patterning of the regenerate. The effects of bmp2 ectopic expression could be antagonized by ectopic expression of chordin, an inhibitor of bone morphogenetic protein (bmp) signaling.Quint et al. (2001) reported the bmp2b signaling in the proliferation and/or differentiation of specialized bone-secreting cells in the blastema and suggest shh expression may be controlled by regulatory feedback mechanisms that define the region of bone secretion in the outgrowing fin. Bakkers et al. (2002) during his studies, np63 involvement BMP signaling, reported the co-expression of np3 along with bmp2b gene. Leung et al. (2003) studied the bozozok (boz) mutants of Zebrafish which are having severe defects in axial mesoderm and anterior neurectoderm and affect organizer formation. Leung et al 2003 identified the high affinity site for boz in the 1st intron of bmp2b, so expression analysis of bmp2b indicates that Boz negatively regulates bmp2b in the prospective organizerCrotwell et al. (2004) reported the expressed of bmp2b in developing fin rays, hypertrophic chondrocytes, and in the zone of segmentation (ZS) in developing anal and dorsal fin radials.Cao et al. (2004) showed that over expression of fgf17b gene which is responsible for pattern formation on Zebrafish development, inhibited expression of bmp2 and bmp4 on the ventral side . And determined whether this inhibition occurred indirectly by fgf17b promoting expression of chd on the dorsal side. Injection with 1 pg of fgf17b mRNA resulted in reduction of bmp2 and bmp4 expression at the shield stage in over 95% (n > 28) of the embryos.Fritz et al. (2004) reported that the 3’untranslated regions of bmp2 gene 265 nucleotide sequence, is unusually long and alternatively polyadenylated and contains essential regulatory elements that act post-transcriptionally.Holzschuh et al. (2005) using a genetic interference approach identified bmp2b as crucial component of the endodermal signals that induce epibranchial neurogenesis.Wise et al. (2006) characterized expression of Bmp2b gene during the development of oral and pharyngeal dentitions in three species of teleost fishes, the zebrafish (Danio rerio), Mexican tetra (Astyanax mexicanus), and Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes). Wise et al 2006 found that the expression in teleosts is generally highly conserved, with minor differences found among both iteratively homologous and phylogenetically homologous teeth. Using transgenic lines that are ectopically expressed bmp2b, Chocron et al. (2007) showed a requirement for BMP signaling during early segmentation to repress southpaw expression in the right lateral plate mesoderm and regulate both visceral and heart laterality in Zebrafish development.Ramel et al. (2005) postulated that timely differentiation of the mesoderm requires the maintenance of non-axial mesoderm identity by Wnt8 and BMP2b at the onset of gastrulation followed by subdivision of the non-axial mesoderm into different functional domains during gastrulation. Ramel et al 2005 using swirl mutants of Zebrafish studied and reported that bmp2b is required for mesoderm patterning during the gastrulation.
GeneCloning Martinez -Barbera et al.(1997) described the cloning and expression of bmp2b Zebrafish gene, in order to study the evolution of Bmps. Martinez -Barbera et al.(1997) isolated cDNAs for three members of the zebrafish Bmp gene family: Bmp2a, Bmp2b and Bmp4.

DisordersAndMutations Kishimoto et al. (1997) demonstrate that the swirl phenotype is caused by mutations in the zebrafish bmp2 gene (zbmp2).Further Kishimoto et al. (1997) investigated zbmp2 and swirl linkage.Jeroen Bakkers et al. (2003) used bmp2b mutants/swr in his experimental studies were he has shown Has2 requirement in during zebrafish gastrulation.Little et al. (2004) found that knockdown of Tsg1 results in a moderately strong dorsalization, consistent with a loss of BMP signaling. Little et al. (2004) also studied the genetic interaction between tsg1 and bmp2b (swirl), supporting a role for Tsg1 as a BMP signaling agonist. Little et al 2004 demonstrate that mini fin (tolloid) and tsg1 cooperate in the promotion of BMP signaling.Holzschuh et al. (2005) used morpholino oligomersto target the translation start sites of bmp2b, MO phenocopies swirl mutants; 900 pg of bmp7 MO phenocopies snailhouse mutants. Bae et al. (2006) used bmp2b mutant swirl to study the expression of her3 and her9 genes in Zebrafish.
