GeneDescription This gene encodes glutathione-dependent formaldehyde dehydrogenase or class III alcohol dehydrogenase chi subunit, which is a member of the alcohol dehydrogenase family. Members of this family metabolize a wide variety of substrates, including ethanol, retinol, other aliphatic alcohols, hydroxysteroids, and lipid peroxidation products. Functionally, Adh5 is a glutathione-dependent formaldehyde dehydrogenase.
GeneFunction Dasmahapatra et al. (2005) reported that adh5 is expressed during early development and thus it may play a key role in ethanol metabolism during early development (048 h) and the ethanol-induced cardiovascular abnormalities may be the result of acetaldehyde formation by ADH5 rather than direct effect of ethanol.
